Legislators Urge DOD to Add BioTech Companies to China Affiliate List

House China Committee leaders say weaponized “synthetic pathogens” are possible.

Representatives Michael Gallager of Wisconsin and Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois recently wrote a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, strongly recommending that the Department of Defense (DoD) add seven Chinese biotech firms to a list of companies known to work with the Chinese military.

“Urgent action is needed,” said the legislators, who serve as the chair and ranking member of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. The two leaders cited risks that China could “create synthetic pathogens” to gain military advantage.

The Defense Department stated that it would respond to their concerns as soon as possible. The Chinese Embassy in Washington also issued a statement on the letter, speaking against the suppression of Chinese companies in the U.S.

“When it comes to ‘using biotech to strengthen its military,’ the U.S. side should reflect on itself, rather than groundlessly attacking and smearing China,” spokesperson Liu Pengyu stated.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for leaders at the Pentagon as they assess the request to add Chinese biotech companies to the affiliate list.
  • For members of Congress as they raise concerns and provide federal oversight to government departments.
